How to Style Pajama Pants

I’ll admit that this trend is something I’ve been fighting for quite some time now. I originally saw head-to-toe pajama looks all over the street style photos from 2017* and have since held mixed feelings. One part of me loved how this style looked so effortless and lived in. The other part of me couldn’t quite wrap my head around pajamas as daywear.

*Read more on the pajama trend here.

Like so many trends, it has trickled down from the trendsetting crew and grown on me over time. Will I ever be lounging in head-to-toe silk printed pjs, probably not, but a nice wide legged silk trousers? Yes, please.

Here is my beginners guide to pulling off this spring trend to those of us that teeter the line between fashion forward and risk averse.

  1. Pick a pant length for your height and style.

Want a little height? A high waisted, wide leg, full length style like the one I’m wearing looks great paired with a chunky heel. Prefer flats? Pair them with a cropped style.

  2. Opt for a slouchy top.

For me, the key to creating this effortless feel was pairing the wide legs with a loose fitted and comfy top. Because I live in the Bay Area and San Francisco is forever in between Spring and Winter weather, a textured sweater allowed me to rock this look without a jacket.

STYLIST TIP: Tuck in the front of your top to avoid losing your waistline.

  3. Pair neutrals with a colorful print.

I love a good mixed print ensemble but I let the pants do the talking for this every day look. That said, go big and bold with your pant style. If everything else is understated, why not take a little fashion risk?

  4. Chunky accessories are your friend.

When choosing accessories, grab substantial pieces like chunky shoes and shades. This is a bold look and a bit of structure keeps it from feeling too casual.

So where exactly did I wear this look? A day trip to the city with my 1 year old in tow. This comfy yet stylish look took me straight from errands downtown, to a park on the North side of town and back to a casual dinner with my sister (stroller in tow). If you want to try it yourself I’ve included my stylist shopping guide below as well as the full shopping list to what I’m wearing in the photos above. Who knows, maybe next time you’ll see me in head to toe silk prints.
